What good is ... faith [that] does not have works?
Faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
Someone may say, “You have faith and I have works.”
Demonstrate your faith to me without works,
and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.
(James 2:14, 17, 18b)
As a Parish Community, we have a Gospel mandate (Matthew 25:34-36) to work towards a society where all people are treated with fairness, justice, and dignity and where their basic human needs (both physical and psychological) are met.
We are also a voice for the disadvantaged advocating for equal opportunity and the means for them to rise above their circumstances and become active, contributing members of their communities.
Catholic Social Justice Teaching provides us with guidelines for our mandate.
Charity: meets the immediate needs of persons and families. It treats the symptoms of social problems. Charity calls forth a generous response from individuals and responds to particular situations.
Justice: changes social structure that attack human dignity, oppress people, and contribute to poverty. It focuses on the rights of people, addressing underlying social causes, and works for long term social change.
Catholic Social Teaching informs us that both charity and justice should be an ongoing endeavor of our spiritual and parish life.
Tithing Committee: 3% of regular Sunday collections goes for various charities. Meets quarterly to determine recipients. Organizations to receive tithing are from proposals of groups or parishioner. Charities within the greater Monroe County are a priority. Meetings are open; new members are welcome.
Sunday Dinner Ministry: Third Sunday of every month volunteers provide a hot, nutritious, home-cooked meal to anyone in Fairport who need it (served at the Fairport United Methodist Church). Help greet, coordinate, cook, shop, serve, set up/clean up, provide rides, or deliver meals to the home bound.
Caring and Sharing: "to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless": mortgage/rent/utility payments; food/gift cards. Caring & Sharing Christmas Outreach.
Parish Reach-out: Occasionally deliver meals (prepared for takeout) to parishioners when a family member is ill or recovering from surgery and needs temporary assistance. We also provide rides to doctor appointments or do a prescription pickup at a pharmacy. No meetings are required. The coordinator will contact you to let you know the needs of the family. To become involved or, if you know someone who could use this help, please contact the parish office.
Martha Ministry: Welcomes volunteers to provide food for funeral receptions. Prepare/serve, to help ease the burden of the grieving family-served either at church or at the home.
